THE SOUTHERN GENTLEMAN OF WRESTLING
---’81 – The Triple Tournament beginning:
“General Manager” and Ring Announcer Teddy Spry makes an announcement through local Georgia news outlets that a new Wrestling Organization is starting in the area. They open with a television special. Teddy announces his plans to run this organization with integrity and built on southern Hospitality and Gentleman like conduct. “There will be no bad guys. Only Friendly, but intense Competition” . The television show was a tournament to see who faces off for the three separate announced championships – Highlighted, of course, by the Heavywheight Championship tournament.
In that first show there was already some cheating and villainous activity by one “Beartrap” Kenny snubs – who announced that he didn’t like the format and wasn’t going to play by the rules. He proved that later in the night with a sneaky brass knuckle victory over “Righteous” Sammy Watkins. “USA” Adam Gray handedly went through his two opponents for the night: “Grizzly” Willy Wild. They shook hands after the match and hugged – cementing a long time Champ and side kick relationship. And, “ The Sculpture” Mitchell Gorgeous – who left the ring vowing revenge – also showing himself to have a villainous side.
Also that night, through a series of matches, the two contenders for the tag belt and Southern Championship belt were announce: Texas vs. The Mechanics for tag and “Whistling” Danny Spicer vs. “Mean streak” Michael Weeks.
The stage was set for the first annual Barnyard Stampede. Winning the tag team championship was Texas: “Cowboy” Reed Mitchum and “Cowboy” Bruce Houston
Winning the Southern belt was young upstart and surprise: “Whistling” Danny Spicer. Cementing himself as a friendly crowd favorite.
Winning the Main Event was “USA” Adam Gray over “Beartrap” Kenny Snubbs. The event ended in controversy when “The Snob” Richie King introduced himself at the end and announced his stable that revolves around taking “USA” out: “Beartrap” Kenny snubs, “The Sculpture” Mitchell Gorgeous, The Russian and their enforcer MOUNTAIN! It was clear that the vision of a Gentleman’s wrestling organization would be short lived….
